Flash…wow oh

I’ve just updated my flash player to the latest version (thanks Pete for sending the link) which now includes H.264 standard video support.

I didn’t have a clue what that meant but apparently it allows flash to stream the same standard of video deployed in Blue-Ray and HD-DVD (high definition video players) and the audio is also improved (high efficiency AAC).

Check out Adobe’s flash on site, the quality is pretty amazing!

  1. cool - thanks for this.

Shame there is not enough bandwidth being offered (or content) to have the same quality of Blu ray and HD-DVD while streaming. The high bit-rates for both HD formats are far to high.

Should allow a lot more room for increased video resolution and a smaller size for web usage, but we are far away from streaming true HD quality from the web.

Is this similar technology used for the iPhone getting youtube to work using H.264?

  2. Indeed! I’m no expert (as you can tell), but as you pointed out it will allow for increased video resolution on the net which is no bad thing. I don’t condone the illegal streaming of tv and films ;) but if I did I’d be reasonably happy with the quality of the stream and the updated flashplayer 9 is only going to improve that.

Bandwidth seems to be increasing exponentially and I’m sure the connection speed needed for commercial video streaming on large scale will soon be available. It is of course the same old story- you’re only as fast as you’re slowest asset, and it just so happens that Adobe have made available a technology that can be fully facilitated because the remainder of the assets are yet to catch up!

As for the iPhone- not a clue. All I know is that being able to take out my phone and watch a video is wicked! Only problem is that it requires an EDGE connection, which whilst being in London is fine, but sat in a blizzard half way up a peak in Snowdonia is a different story. I have heard that the next release (possible due late this year) will be 3G.
